Intelligent Transportation SystemIntelligent Transportation System’s (ITS) information and communication technologies are mostly referred to the field of road transport. ITS vary in technologies applied, from basic management systems such as car navigation, traffic signal control systems, container management systems, variable message signs, automatic number plate recognition or speed cameras to monitor applications (security surveillance systems), and to more advanced applications that integrate live data and feedback from a number of other sources, such as parking guidance and information systems, weather information, bridge de-icing systems, and so on.
Motivated by increasing focus on homeland security, governments actively invest in road ITS. ITS significantly decreases a safety risk for participants of road transportation and eliminates traffic congestion. Moreover, ITS can aid in rapid mass evacuation of people after large casualty events such as a result of natural disaster or threat. Therefore, it is of high importance to deploy highly reliable and pertinent network devices in ITS data communication system.
ITS is fairly considered to be a highly critical infrastructure: high network reliability, network redundancy, long service life of network devices at temperature extremes, other unfavorable weather conditions, and long distance network coverage - are the major requirements of ITS.

Rugged design of the WoMaster’s equipment ensures efficient operation in harsh environment of ITS market and allows installation along highways, in tunnels and in city centers. ITS being a mission-critical infrastructure, encounters a possible threat of rogues’ attacks.  Cyber redundancy functions increase reliability and safety of ITS providing sustainable operating of data communication network and, consequently, safety for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
Reliability and high degree of resilience of our equipment are proved by meeting the main standards of industrial Ethernet, such as IEEE 1588 for precision time protocol (PTPv2), IEEE 802.3af/at standard for PoE and PoE+, IEEE 802.11n for fast roaming and high bandwidth wireless solutions, IEC 60068-2-6 and IEC 600682-27 for protection from vibration and shock, and compliant with road side approval NEMA TS2.
All the features mentioned above make WoMaster’s solutions perfectly suitable for ITS market and for resolving its’ major challenges. To maximize performance, we are opened for discussion of developing customized products for your very concrete ITS case. Due to our detailed insight knowledge, ITS automation accommodates increased operation efficiency and high reliability.
Highway Traffic Control

Highway traffic control

For highway traffic control it is strategically important to deploy dynamic network infrastructure with strong consideration of the long distance of the data communication and unfavorable weather conditions, hence, there appears a need in rugged equipment suitable for harsh environments and able to transmit real-time data to Monitoring Center as well as to provide PoE functionality, early PD fault-detection and very low to zero network recovery time. WoMaster’s solution meets all of the requirements of the expressway traffic automation. Feasibility and high performance of the technology has been shown by implementation of the following network topology:
Din-rail switches DS620 with 20 Gigabit copper ports, including 4 Gigabit SFP/ combo ports, are installed along the roads and constitute Gigabit Fiber Ring for network redundancy. Copper ports are used to collect traffic data from various measurements devices, traffic control systems and IP-cameras; as for Gigabit SFP/combo ports, they are used for long distance transmission over optical fiber to backbone network and up to Expressway Monitoring Center. Importantly, DS620 features IP 31 rugged design, aluminum enclosure capable of resisting to vibration and shock, highly heavy industrial electromagnetic compatibility level, wide  -40~75°C  operating temperature and wide range power input which guarantee excellent environmental adaptation to outdoor applications with high noise interference, such as Intelligent Traffic Control System. Moreover, supporting of IEEE 1588v2 PTP with hardware time stamping provides precise time synchronization which is of high importance in Intelligent Traffic Control Systems.
With this outstanding system design, DS620 is an ideal choice for ITCS data transmission.

In order to collect the data from remotely located road sites, din-rail PoE switches DP310 are used. Through 8 af/at PoE ports, DP310 supply power to IP-cameras and other traffic data collection equipment, whilst Link Partner Line Detect function (LPLD) monitors the status of connected PD and auto-resets PD if it is not alive. 2 SFP ports are used to uplink the data on the distance up to 30KM to DS620 for further transmission to Expressway Monitoring Center.
Highway traffic monitoring

The second diagram shows another type of network topology for highway traffic monitoring with implementation of WoMaster’s equipment:

Din-rail switches DS409 are efficiently deployed in multiple ring network topology. High bandwidth of gigabit Ethernet and fiber connection are required for real-time video stream and large flow of other types of data from widely-located sites to monitoring room. DS409 meets the requirements by providing 9 gigabit copper ports for collecting multiple locations’ road site data, including 5 SFP/combo ports for long-distance connectivity.  The overall network performance is also enhanced by implementing advanced management protocols: VLAN, IGMP, LLDP, and SNMP, etc. With all the advanced software features, DS409 ensures high performance data communication.

In the Expressway Monitoring Center, rackmount switch RS328-F is installed. RS328-F is equipped with 8 100M copper ports, 4 100/1000M RJ-45/SFP combo and 16 SFP ports that allow deploying up to 14 Rings for maximized network scale.
RS328-F features Cyber Security functions, such as:

 DHCP snooping for preventing unauthorized (rogue) DHCP servers offering IP addresses to DHCP clients;

 Dynamic ARP Inspection for rejecting invalid and malicious ARP packets;
 IP Source Guard (IPSG) for checking the authenticity of IP addresses to prevent a malicious host from spoofing of IP addresses;
 Denial of Service protection for preventing DoS attacks which have evolved into complex and overwhelming security challenges;
 L2/L3/L4 Access Control List for controlling the traffic by filtering packets based on the information contained in the headers to prevent hackers’ attacks.
All of the features outlined above as well as Ring and Chain Redundancy, and 24/48 VDC or 110/220 VAC isolated redundant power supplies increase reliability of ITS network and, consequently, security for the road traffic participants.
