WoM Europe, December 4, 2017 – For more convenient system management in large scale industrial networks, system integrators frequently choose to deploy Ethernet switches in Major ring and Sub-ring(s) topology which requires reliable network protection from loop formation and broadcast storm. The most efficient protection solution is provided by the latest redundancy protocol ITU-T G.8032 v2 ERPS (Ethernet Ring Protection Switching) which is tending to replace proprietary ring redundancy, standard Ethernet Ring Switching, Chain, and Dual homing, as it ensures stable protection from loop formation on Ethernet level, less than 50 ms recovery time, supports multiple ring (ladder) topology, provides economical and highly resilient Ethernet infrastructure, as well as successfully maintains fast recovery time when interoperating with third party switches.
 
WoMaster developed and launched the product range of managed Ethernet and PoE switches with the support of G.8032 v2 ERPS. To provide technical support for its partners, WoMaster filmed an online technical training demo tutorial clearly demonstrating the necessary steps of Major Ring and sub-ring configuration in Web Management interface.
These steps include configuring:

1. different IP addresses to each device;
2. separate VLANs for major ring and each sub-ring by assigning all of the ports to a certain VLAN to make sure that the messages are sent to correct ports;
3. blocking port of Ring Protection Link owner (RPL-owner);
4. Control channel for each ring sending R-APS (Signal Fault) message inside the ring;
5. Virtual channel to allow sending R-APS messages from sub-ring to major ring.

In conclusion, we want to emphasize the two considerable conveniences for system integrators in system management: the first is that implementing such “major ring and sub-ring” topology with ERPS v.2 allow them accessing and configuring any ring in topology from any place, so they don’t have to be in the particular place to identify the network problems which is especially valuable for large networks. And secondly, ring failure and ring recovery session in any ring will not have absolutely any influence on other rings in topology.
